DCT stands for "Dual Clutch Transmission." It is a type of transmission that has been a part of the Honda range since 2009. It operates by using two separate clutches to engage and disengage different gears. This allows the motorcycle to shift gears smoothly and quickly, without the rider having to use a clutch lever or foot pedal. Some of the benefits of a DCT transmission on a motorcycle include improved acceleration and fuel efficiency, as well as a more comfortable and controlled riding experience.
What are the other benefits of DCT
Some more benefits of a DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) include:
Improved acceleration: the DCT can shift gears quickly and smoothly, it can help to improve the acceleration of the motorcycle.
Fuel efficiency: DCT transmissions are generally more fuel efficient than traditional manual transmissions, as they can shift gears more efficiently.
Comfort and control: Riding a motorcycle with a manual transmission can be tiring, as the rider has to constantly operate the clutch and shift gears. With a DCT, the rider does not have to worry about these tasks, which can make for a more comfortable and controlled ride.
Reduced rider fatigue: Because the DCT takes care of the shifting for you, the rider does not have to exert as much effort to control the motorcycle. This can help to reduce rider fatigue, especially on long rides.
Enhanced safety: In certain situations, such as when riding in heavy traffic or on slippery roads, having a DCT can make it easier for the rider to focus on the road and maintain control of the motorcycle.
Easy to use: For riders who are new to motorcycles, or who are not comfortable with a manual transmission, a DCT can be an easier and more forgiving option.
Can you ride a DCT motorbike on an automatic only licence?
In most cases, you will need a full motorcycle licence in order to ride a motorcycle with a DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) or any other type of transmission. As the DCT machine can still be ridden as a ‘manual’ with hand shift, it is understood that a full motorcycle licence is required. You will need to pass a theory test, a Mod 1 test which is a skills-based exam held at a test centre where you will not be required to ride on the road, followed by a Mod 2 test which is a road-based test, following a set route decided by an examiner. If you have an automatic-only licence, you may be able to ride a motorcycle with an automatic transmission, such as many scooters in Honda’s range.
